Blue Copper Marans are a striking and beloved variety of the Marans breed, which originated in France and was introduced to the United States in the mid-1940s. Known for their beautiful slate-blue plumage accented with warm copper tones, these birds are especially prized for laying the rich, dark “chocolate” eggs Marans are famous for.
Beyond their exceptional eggs, Blue Copper Marans are a wonderful addition to any flock thanks to their hardy nature and calm, friendly personalities. They adapt well to a range of climates, integrate easily into mixed flocks, and are both productive and easy to manage—making them a favorite among backyard keepers and seasoned poultry enthusiasts alike.
The blue coloring in Blue Copper Marans comes from the Blue Andalusian gene, an incompletely dominant gene that affects feather color. When present in a single copy, it produces the classic blue shade. Two copies result in blue splash offspring, while birds without the gene appear black. This is why blue breeding programs naturally produce a mix of blue, black, and occasional splash chicks (BBS)—adding both genetic interest and variety for breeders and hobbyists alike.
We have been working with Marans since 2005 and are deeply committed to breeding birds that align closely with the standard of perfection. Our selection focuses on proper conformation, sound temperament, consistent productivity, and, of course, the darkest egg color possible.
Our current breeding pen consists of a Black Copper rooster over Blue Copper hens. This pairing will produce both Blue and Black Copper Marans chicks. These birds represent years of careful breeding and dedication, offering both beauty and performance for those looking to add exceptional Marans to their flock.
